Limescale in the UK affects all types of plumbing products that have hard water flowing through them.
Saniflo macerators are no exception.
Saniflo macerators need descaling at least twice a year for normal use. In areas of very hard water or where the Saniflo is in heavy daily use, we recommend descaling
three to four times per year. Regular use of a proper Saniflo descaler will prevent many common problems, including failure to start, failure to stop and
intermittent operation.
Saniflo Engineers Answer Your Queries: How to Flush, Clean and Use Saniflo Descaler for a Cleaner System
Even if you have a water softener, you are not completely immune from scale build-up inside a Saniflo. A macerator pump is a human-waste machine and needs cleaning regularly, not just to
control odours but also to protect the internal components and extend the life of the unit.

Step-by-Step: How to Clean a Saniflo with Saniflo Descaler
1. Turn off the power supply to your Saniflo. This may be a local switch or a fused spur. Make sure the macerator is completely isolated from the mains before you start.
2. Pour 2.5 litres of Saniflo descaler into the toilet bowl feeding the macerator. If you have a larger Saniflo unit such as a Saniplus, Sanipro or Sanibest Pro,
we recommend using the full 5 litres for a deep clean.
3. Leave the descaler to stand inside the Saniflo macerator for up to two hours for best results. This allows the limescale and deposits to break down properly.
4. Switch the power back on or replace the fuse. The macerator should run momentarily, pumping out the Saniflo descaler. Once the macerator stops, flush the toilet once, wait for
the unit to stop, then flush once more. This rinses the Saniflo macerator and clears any remaining debris.
5. Important: Do not leave Saniflo descaler in the unit overnight (as some websites incorrectly suggest). Leaving any descaler in for too long can damage your
machine. The instructions on the back of the Saniflo descaler bottle clearly state the maximum recommended contact time is around two hours.
There are alternative descaling products you can buy, but the Saniflo branded descaler is specifically formulated for Saniflo macerators and is the safest choice.
Below we have provided links to Saniflo descaler and a popular alternative product.
Pro-Kleen is a concentrated Saniflo descaling solution. Follow the same steps above, then pour roughly one third of a 5-litre container into the toilet pan, flush once to draw it into the
macerator and leave it to stand for around two hours.
